2017 Herring Fishery - Southwest Nova Scotia / Bay of Fundy

The 4WX herring fishery occurs in the spawning areas off Southwest Nova Scotia (SWNS), including the Bay of Fundy.

Dates of season (subject to change)

The 2016-2017 herring fishery operates from October 15th, 2016 – October 14th, 2017.

Total Allowable Catches

The 2016/17 Total Allowable Catch (TAC) is 42,500t:

  • Mid Water Trawl: 340t
  • Purse Seine: 33,728t
  • Fixed Gear: 8,432t

This represents a 15% decrease from the previous TAC of 50,000t. The approved decrease is in keeping with the Precautionary Approach and contributes to rebuilding the stock that remains in the cautious zone.
