La morue charbonnière se retrouve dans le Pacifique, près du plateau continental et de son talus. Son aire de répartition va de la Basse-Californie jusqu'en Colombie-Britannique et en Alaska vers le nord, puis jusqu'au Kamtchatka et au Japon vers l'ouest, en passant par le détroit de Béring. Les adultes vivent près du fond sur des substrats mous, à des profondeurs allant jusqu'à 2 700 mètres. Les jeunes individus migrent vers les eaux côtières et y passent plusieurs années en eaux peu profondes, puis, devenus adultes, ils migrent vers le large.
Description de l'espèce
La morue charbonnière a un corps mince et allongé couvert de petites écailles. La bouche est grande et ornée de très petites dents, et la queue est légèrement fourchue. Le dos est gris foncé ou vert grisâtre, souvent marqué de grandes taches pâles, et est surmonté de deux nageoires dorsales très espacées. Le ventre va du gris pâle au blanc. La morue charbonnière peut atteindre une taille assez grande; elle peut mesurer plus d'un mètre et peser de 11 à 25 kilogrammes. Elle vit longtemps, certains individus capturés ayant plus de 80 ans.
Cycle biologique de la morue charbonnière
La morue charbonnière (Anoplopoma fimbria), souvent désignée sous le nom de morue noire, habite les eaux de la plate-forme et de l’escarpement jusqu'à des profondeurs de 1500 m, de la Basse Californie jusqu’au Japon. Elles sont plus abondantes dans le nord de la C.-B. et dans le Golfe de l'Alaska. Quoi qu’il y ait suffisamment de déplacement entre les secteurs pour considérer les morues charbonnières comme une seule population sur le plan génétique, le déplacement des adultes est assez limité pour permettre l'évaluation et la gestion sur une plus petite échelle. Des évaluations indépendantes sont effectués par le U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service dans la mer de Béring, le Golfe de l'Alaska et au Washington et en Californie. Au Canada, le MPO effectue des analyses distinctes pour les eaux du nord et du sud de la C.-B., avec la limite située à environ 51.25 °N de latitude selon les patrons différents de recrutement et de croissance.
Le frai de cette espèce a lieu de janvier à mars le long de la plate-forme continentale à des profondeurs de plus de 1000 m. Les larves de la morue charbonnière se trouvent dans les eaux de surface de la plate-forme et de l’escarpement en avril et mai. Les juvéniles migrent vers la côte au cours des six mois suivants et vivent dans des habitats côtiers et de la plate-forme jusqu'à l'âge de 2-5 ans lorsqu’ils migrent en mer et sont pêchés. Les juvéniles sont fortement migrateurs et effectuent des déplacements importants à partir des aires d'alevinage dans le détroit d’Hécate vers le Golfe de l'Alaska et la mer de Béring. Leur croissance est très rapide et la taille moyenne de la femelle à maturité est de 55 cm atteint à 3-5 ans. Les tailles maximales sont de ~80cm et le poisson le plus âgé jusqu'ici avait 113 ans. Les paramètres d'âge, de croissance et de maturité changent considérablement selon les secteurs et les profondeurs.
Le recrutement de la morue charbonnière varie selon les fortes classes d’âge qui se produisent périodiquement. On croit que la production des fortes classes d’âge est liée à une abondance plus élevée de copépodes durant des conditions environnementales favorables. La longue durée de vie de cette espèce est vraisemblablement une stratégie pour assurer sa survie pendant des périodes étendues de faible recrutement découlant de conditions environnementales défavorables.
Pêche à la morue charbonnière
La morue charbonnière est exploitée depuis longtemps ayant des débarquements enregistrés depuis 1913. La pêche étrangère s’est faite entre 1961 et 1981 et a graduellement diminué après la déclaration de la zone de pêche de 200 milles en 1977.
La pêche domestique est effectuée en utilisant des trappes coréennes fixées sur des palangres et un nombre modeste est récolté à l’aide d’hameçons de palangre et de filets de chalut. La pêche à la palangre s’effectue en eau profonde, visant des profondeurs entre 500 et 1000m. La pêche à la palangre de la morue charbonnière est réglementée selon un permis de catégorie «K» et peut se faire avec des hameçons ou des trappes. Un système de contingent individuel transférable (CIT) a été utilisé pour la gestion de cette pêche depuis 1990. La pêche au chalut est allouée environ 8% du contingent disponible.
