Protecting 25% of our oceans by 2025 and 30% by 2030
Transcript
Canada is an ocean nation.
Our future depends on the health of our oceans and the vast ecosystems, biodiversity, and marine life they sustain.
In 2015, less than 1% of Canada’s oceans were protected.
We promised to change that.
Today nearly 14% of Canada’s ocean territory is protected.
We’re not stopping there.
We’re working with partners to establish new marine protected areas and marine refuges.
We’re going to protect 25% of our oceans by 2025 and 30% by 2030.
Because heathy oceans support healthy communities.
They reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 20%.
They sustain more fish and marine life, to support more jobs and more opportunities for Canadians.
When we protect our oceans, we’re protecting Canada’s future.
