Vision and mandate for aquaculture

Within Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s overall Mandate and role, the Department’s vision for aquaculture is “to benefit Canadians, now and in the future, through the culture of aquatic organisms, while upholding the ecological and socio-economic values associated with Canada's oceans and inland waters.”

The Aquaculture Policy Framework describes in broad terms how we are realizing this vision by working with the provinces, territories, Indigenous peoples, the aquaculture industry, and individual Canadians. In particular, the Department is collaborating with these partners to increase public confidence in the sustainability of aquaculture development and create the conditions necessary to enable the responsible growth of this important industry while ensuring sustainable aquatic ecosystems for the future. The Department works closely with other federal agencies, provinces and territories to ensure the appropriate regulation of the aquaculture sector.
