Groundfish

Cod, Haddock, Pollock, Flounder, Dogfish, Red hake, Silver hake and White hake

The Maritimes Region is divided into two areas for the purpose of managing the recreational groundfish fishery:

  • Halifax Harbour and West, including the Bay of Fundy; and
  • Hartlen Point (at the entrance to Halifax Harbour) East to Cape North in Cape Breton, including the Bras d’Or lakes.

Retention prohibitions

Retention of Halibut, Northern wolffish and Spotted wolffish is prohibited year round. Striped or Atlantic wolffish may be retained as part of the general bag limit for recreational groundfish.

Open from February 1st until December 31st

Gear Restrictions

Handline and angling are permitted.

Limits

The daily groundfish bag limit is 10 in total (for example, 5 flounder and 5 haddock for a total of 10).

No cod may be retained except for the period between the 3rd Saturday in June to Labour Day when only 5 cod may be retained as part of the daily bag limit of 10 groundfish.
