Weather monitoring

Vessel owners and operators are reminded of the importance of paying close attention to current and forecasted weather conditions during fishing trips. Marine weather information can be obtained through Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) web page providing marine forecasts and warnings.

Various protocols have been established by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and the Coast Guard while working with ECCC, Transport Canada (TC) and Industry, to assess weather conditions that may create risks for certain fleets. These protocols focus on marine elements such as wind speed and direction, sea conditions including ice and sea swells, as well as precipitation and temperatures, with the objective of adjusting season dates to support fishing safety.

Please contact your local DFO office for more information on weather protocols, or if you have any questions or concerns regarding your safety on the water.
