Fish and fish habitat protection engagement and partnerships
The Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program aims to bring together and understand the varied objectives and priorities of partners and stakeholders. This includes all those interested in conserving and protecting fish and fish habitat.
To help inform program planning and decision making, we’re engaging:
- Indigenous peoples
- industry representatives
- non-governmental organizations
- other levels of government
- the public
Conservation and protection outcomes
Working with partners will allow us to better conserve and protect fish and fish habitat by:
- preparing early planning support for decisions around:
- project investments
- economic development
- identifying fish and fish habitat:
- sensitive areas
- sustainability threats
- establishing objectives for how to:
- manage threats
- restore areas that have been impacted
- providing expert advice to project proponents on:
- mitigation and conservation measures
- habitat restoration and offsetting activities
- effectively participating in collaborative planning processes for freshwater and coastal habitats
- reporting timely and relevant information on the state of fish and fish habitat for Canadians and decision-makers, using:
- indicators
- data sources
- modern tools and platforms
We’ll also be able to reduce regulatory overlap and ensure that processes and requirements for project proponents are clear, streamlined and transparent through effective coordination with:
- provinces and territories
- Indigenous governing bodies
- municipalities
