Multi-Partner Research Initiative
The Multi-Partner Research Initiative fosters an integrated, global research network with government agencies, academia, response organizations, oil industry, Indigenous communities and other oil spill science and response experts.
It also:
- advances oil spill research and enhances Canada’s level of preparedness and capability to respond to marine oil pollution
- advances scientific knowledge and science-based decision making in oil spill response operations
- improves our knowledge of current and emerging oil spill response and remediation strategies

Program areas
The Multi-Partner Research Initiative focuses on 6 areas:
- spill treating agents
- in-situ burning
- oil translocation
- decanting and oily waste management
- natural attenuation
- cross-cutting areas of research
Outcomes
As a result of the research projects in this initiative, we have:
- provided funding to Canadian and international oil spill research teams to support collaboration and help improve our knowledge of current and emerging oil spill preparedness, response and remediation strategies
- built an international network of expertise (involving over 300 researchers from more than 80 institutions and 14 countries)
- facilitated knowledge sharing between researchers, decision makers and end users
- supported continued improvements in oil spill response preparedness and practice
- contributed science-based evidence and national expertise to support Net Environmental Benefit Analysis and decision making on Canada’s oil spill preparedness and response regime
- helped develop new oil spill response technology and strategies to enhance Canada’s options for oil spill response
- supported the growth of the next generation of oil spill researchers and response practitioners (over 120 students and postdoctoral fellows)
