Survey Overview

The 2005 Survey of Recreational Fishing in Canada was the 7th cycle of the survey which began in 1975 and is conducted every five years. The survey's target population covered all individuals identified in the 2005 provincial and territorial recreational fishing licence databases Footnote 2. In 2005, the questionnaires were mailed out to over 80,000 households within Canada and in other countries to obtain information on recreational fishing activities (Table 2.1).

The sample design was based on the licensing databases in each province and territory. Samples were selected using stratified, systematic random sampling with stratification based on licence category. Sample sizes were determined from the reliability estimates for days fished for each stratum, as calculated from the results of the 2000 Survey of Recreational Fishing in Canada.
