Science Advice

Transcript

Good advice is based on data – data that experts have looked at and made sense of…

…And really good advice has been looked at by other experts to confirm their findings.

At Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), this is called “Science Advice” – It’s step three in our “Data to Decision” process for making decisions about Canada’s fisheries.

Our stock assessments go through a peer-review process where fishery experts from DFO, industry groups, Indigenous communities, academia, and others look at our analyses and provide unbiased reviews of our conclusions.

Once the meeting participants have discussed and agreed on their understanding of the data, information, and analysis, we give our science advice.

We have an entire team – DFO’s Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat – dedicated to making sure our science advice is fair and transparent – in fact, all the science advice reports are available online.

We produce strong science advice so we can support evidence-based management decisions for Canada’s fisheries.
