Operation North Pacific Guard

Transcript

Globally, billions of dollars are lost to illegal fishing. The rules that are established to protect stocks can be undermined.

“Go, go, go, go! Get the bag, get the bag!”

There's a huge international fleet of fishing operations all across the Pacific, from British Columbia all the way to Japan.

So this vessel will be operating under North Pacific Guard. This is Canada's first mission to establish high-seas boarding and inspection, to ensure compliance amongst this fleet.

“Ya, you guys are good to go to your security, we're going to ask you some questions. I told him that we are from Canada, representing the WCPFC.”

This particular mission is super important for us as Canadians. There is a lot of illegal fishing happening, but the more presence we have, the more we can protect our stocks at home.

And it's really important for especially our Pacific Salmon species.

I'm super excited to be a part of this. It's a monumental moment in my career, but also for Canada as a whole.

We work to monitor vast amounts of ocean using satellite technology. We then deploy our aircraft.

We're now in a position where we see all vessels in the Pacific, and so this is part of actually putting boots on deck to inspect and find out what's happening on board those vessels.

And it's not just the salmon aspect of course.

From our previous operations in line with US Coast Guard, we found widespread issues of sharkfinning, pollution, concerns about labour abuse.

These are sharkfins. So you know, none of these bodies are labelled except for these.

This is an area that requires more monitoring, more enforcement. So that we can really establish the structure and the rules that are necessary to have not only sustainable fisheries.

But to protect the environment from some of these other threats. That are posed by unregulated fishing. We really need to ensure that we're upholding the rules that we've established to have sustainable fisheries.
