Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative : Conservation and stewardship

Pacific salmon depend on healthy habitats and aquatic ecosystems to live and flourish. Through the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative, we’re focusing on conservation and stewardship as one of its 4 key pillars. Much has been accomplished under this pillar over the first 2 years of the PSSI.

We’re taking action under this pillar to improve Pacific salmon conservation, including the habitats and ecosystems that salmon rely on.

On a global scale, we have been monitoring habitat conditions on the high seas – where Pacific salmon spend most of their adult lives – using a variety of marine, aerial and satellite tools so we can enforce the international laws that protect them.

Our participation in Operation North Pacific Guard means that multiple nations are able to share the effort to detect and deter illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.

On the domestic front, our new Salmon Habitat Restoration Centre of Expertise has supported 113 restoration projects – many with local First Nations, communities and stewardship groups – to rebuild local habitats that are crucial to spawning and juvenile salmon.

Through the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative (PSSI), we're investing in salmon. Together with our partners, we are working to ensure that our collective salmon stewardship, rebuilding and habitat restoration efforts improve the outcome of Pacific salmon stocks for generations to come.
