Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative: Harvest transformation

Pacific salmon need our help. The harvest transformation pillar of the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative (PSSI) is one of the ways in which we can help. Our goal is greater viability, sustainability and resilience in the Pacific salmon fishery, all while ensuring those communities that rely on Pacific salmon are supported.

When we announced the PSSI in June 2021, we introduced a series of long-term fishery closures to help stocks rebuild.

We also launched recreational mark selective fisheries pilots and projects to test innovative sustainable salmon harvesting approaches involving 30 different First Nations across BC and Yukon.

In the last year, we announced voluntary financial incentives for commercial harvesters to exit the fishery, exchanging their licences for market value and for Indigenous harvesters to shift to non-salmon species, so that the fleet aligns with the expected harvest opportunities.

Through the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative, we’re giving Pacific salmon stocks a chance to stabilize, while laying a better foundation to support the long-term economic stability of salmon fisheries for the people and communities that depend on them.
