Consultation and Engagement
DFO is using multiple approaches to fully involve First Nations, Indigenous Peoples, other governments, the community, and relevant industries in the design of the proposed Eastern Shore Islands MPA. In addition to established consultation processes for First Nations and the Province of Nova Scotia, a dedicated Advisory Committee was created to serve as a key platform for multi-sector engagement in the MPA establishment process. The purpose of the Advisory Committee was to serve as a forum to share information, exchange views, and provide advice on MPA design prior to designation. The Advisory Committee membership is provided below:

To complement the Advisory Committee and allow for broader participation and input, a working group composed of the membership of the Eastern Shore Fishermen’s Protective Association (ESFPA) was established.
We also welcomed the input of the broader community along the Eastern Shore so we attended meetings with community groups and also hosted public events, including information sessions and workshops that were open to all community members at key points in the site establishment process.
