Overview of Commercial Fisheries Licensing Policy for Eastern Canada
The Commercial Fisheries Licensing Policy for Eastern Canada, 1996, has been archived and is available for reference.
The Commercial Fisheries Licensing Policy for Eastern Canada is an important tool for managing Canada’s commercial fisheries in a way that promotes environmental sustainability and economic viability.
This policy document provides a clear and consistent statement of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans' policy respecting the registration of commercial fishing enterprises and vessels, and the issuance of fishing licences in Eastern Canada. This document also provides objectives against which the appropriateness and effectiveness of policies are to be evaluated.
In pursuit of these objectives, the Department recently made amendments to the Atlantic Fisheries Regulations, 1985, and the Maritime Provinces Fishery Regulations (the Inshore Regulations). The Commercial Fisheries Licensing Policy for Eastern Canada has now been updated and reflects the new regulatory regime. In particular, revisions have been made to the following sections:
- S.3 – Legislative Background
- S. 9 – Terminology
- S. 10 – Reform Strategy
- S. 15 – Key Inshore Policies
- S. 16 – Change of Licence Holder
- S. 34 – Access to Appeal Process
- Annex VII – Pre-1979 Companies List
