Workshop: Science Priorities in support of environmental assessment and performance-based management approaches to finfish aquaculture

MG-04-11-001

Description

This workshop is being planned with the support of the government-industry Southwest New Brunswick Aquaculture-Environment Coordinating Committee (AECC) for June 2 & 3, 2004 in St. Andrews, NB.

As part of its mandate to provide advice to Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and the New Brunswick Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture (DAFA), the AECC has been exploring the development and enhancement of the use of performance based standards (PBS) for the management and regulation of finfish aquaculture. The AECC has prepared a discussion paper on the subject that recommends further examination of information gaps necessary for moving this concept forward. These gaps include aspects of both management and regulatory processes, as well as scientifically based knowledge.

The objective of this workshop is to share information on the present state of scientific knowledge related to the regulatory review and management of New Brunswick aquaculture industry to ensure environmental sustainability and to identify gaps for future science work related to the performance-based standards (PBS).
