Workshop: Oyster Culture Techniques and Presence of Birds
MG-07-09-003
Description
A workshop was held on February 20 and 21, 2008, in Richibucto, N.B., to discuss issues relating to various culture techniques and the presence of birds. The following points on the needs of the industry emerged from the roundtable discussions:
- Requirement to conduct systematic and ongoing analysis of issues relating to production;
- Requirement to develop new working methods in shellfish culture for increased performance;
- Proposal to develop technical fact sheets for shellfish growers regarding their new experiments or improvements and suggestion that the analysis of data and results be carried out by NBPSGA. Funding could be requested from ACOA to this end;
- Have oyster bags divided into three (3) sections to ensure uniform distribution;
- Have adapted wintering sites available to shellfish growers, particularly for Oyster Gro cages;
- Obtain a program or negotiate interest rates limited to 1% for shellfish growers;
- Conduct research on boudeuse oysters;
- Request that the 30-day expiration date on boxes of oysters be changed to 50 days.
