Call for nominations to the Decade Advisory Board
The Decade Advisory Board is a multi-stakeholder advisory body that assists the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO) Secretariat in performing its function as coordinator of the Ocean Decade. The Decade Advisory Board has up to 15 expert members from government, private sector, philanthropy, civil society, and the scientific community, as well as representatives of UN entities. Expert members are selected based on expertise, geographic, generational, and gender balance and serve on a voluntary basis. Membership on the Decade Advisory Board is for a two-year term, renewable for a second mandate. The Decade Advisory Board works mainly through remote means (teleconferences, virtual meetings) with a physical meeting anticipated at least once a year.
If you are interested in self-nominating for the Decade Advisory Board, you can do so here. The Call for Nominations will be open until October 30, 2023 at 23:59 CEST. Additional information can be found here.
Apply now: Canadian scholarship and fellowship opportunities
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) have partnered to offer the Fisheries and Oceans Canada Aquatic Science supplement. The objective of the supplement is to support and encourage research in natural sciences and engineering by high-calibre doctoral students pursuing studies in areas of relevance to DFO’s Ecosystems and Oceans Science Sector and to advance Canada’s reconciliation agenda, as well as equity, diversity and inclusion in ocean science.
This $10,000 supplement is available to those who are awarded an NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship – Doctoral (PGS D) or a Canada Graduate Scholarship – Doctoral (CGS D). The deadline to submit an application to the PGS D and CGS D programs is October 17, 2023, before 8 pm ET. Visit the NSERC Postgraduate programs webpage for more information about this supplement and other NSERC awards and deadlines.
The Ocean Frontier Institute launches new interactive community report and campaign
The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) is thrilled to announce an exciting new campaign: Making Waves is a weekly series that will profile OFI research projects, and most importantly, the talented people behind them.
OFI has also released an interactive community report illustrating the institute’s accomplishments from 2015 to 2022. The report showcases the achievements of researchers, students, staff, and partners in areas of ocean science, innovation, and policymaking.
ECOP Canada Calls for Submissions to Ocean Decade Photo Competition
The ECOP Canada Ocean Decade Photo Competition is calling for photograph submissions from Canadian residents who self-identify as Early Career Ocean Professionals (i.e., 10 years or less of professional experience within any field related to the ocean). All photographs entered in the Competition must be of Canadian content (i.e. taken in Canada and relating to Canada), and entered into one of the 4 categories:
- The Blue Future
- Unexpected Encounters
- Ocean Solutions
- Things We Do for The Ocean
The winner of the grand prize will be invited to participate in a Students on Ice expedition in 2024 as an expedition photographer and will receive a one-year subscription to the Canadian Geographic magazine. Sponsored by Canadian Geographic, ECOP Canada, and the Students on Ice (SOI) Foundation, the competition is open for photo submissions until 11:59 p.m. EST on November 24, 2023.
Live it Earth Educational Platform receives Ocean Decade endorsement
Live it Earth, an educational platform recently endorsed by the Ocean Decade, has launched their brand new program on the St. Lawrence Estuary. Over 6,000 students tuned in to watch the show and ask questions live to ocean experts on World Oceans Day. To celebrate the Ocean Decade, Live it Earth has opened up 7 ocean-related programs and offers free user access all across Canada. Each program includes a featured show, a comprehensive teacher resource package, and many other resources.
If you’ve missed out on a live session, you can still watch the whole of the Ocean Series using the code OCEANS-23. Make sure to keep an eye out in September for the launch of a brand new show, bringing you stories from the Beaufort Sea Delta!
Ocean People Canada launches and holds its first meeting
Ocean People Canada is a new initiative conceived at the Fifth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC5) in Vancouver by representatives from the Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA), ECOP Canada, Ocean Wise, and Ocean Uprise, aiming to “connect and inform Canada’s ‘ocean people’ to build relationships, share information, and encourage collaboration” through meetings and events.
ORCA is working in collaboration with Ocean People Canada to maximize efforts to achieve our shared goal of bringing the Canadian ocean community together using the infrastructure, resources, and network that are already available through ORCA. For more information about Ocean People Canada, please email oceanpeoplecanada@gmail.com.
