Call for nominations to the Decade Advisory Board

The Decade Advisory Board is a multi-stakeholder advisory body that assists the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO) Secretariat in performing its function as coordinator of the Ocean Decade. The Decade Advisory Board has up to 15 expert members from government, private sector, philanthropy, civil society, and the scientific community, as well as representatives of UN entities. Expert members are selected based on expertise, geographic, generational, and gender balance and serve on a voluntary basis. Membership on the Decade Advisory Board is for a two-year term, renewable for a second mandate. The Decade Advisory Board works mainly through remote means (teleconferences, virtual meetings) with a physical meeting anticipated at least once a year.

Apply now: Canadian scholarship and fellowship opportunities

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) have partnered to offer the Fisheries and Oceans Canada Aquatic Science supplement. The objective of the supplement is to support and encourage research in natural sciences and engineering by high-calibre doctoral students pursuing studies in areas of relevance to DFO’s Ecosystems and Oceans Science Sector and to advance Canada’s reconciliation agenda, as well as equity, diversity and inclusion in ocean science.

This $10,000 supplement is available to those who are awarded an NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship – Doctoral (PGS D) or a Canada Graduate Scholarship – Doctoral (CGS D). The deadline to submit an application to the PGS D and CGS D programs is October 17, 2023, before 8 pm ET. The Ocean Frontier Institute launches new interactive community report and campaign

The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) is thrilled to announce an exciting new campaign: Making Waves is a weekly series that will profile OFI research projects, and most importantly, the talented people behind them.

OFI has also released an interactive community report illustrating the institute’s accomplishments from 2015 to 2022. The report showcases the achievements of researchers, students, staff, and partners in areas of ocean science, innovation, and policymaking.

ECOP Canada Calls for Submissions to Ocean Decade Photo Competition

The ECOP Canada Ocean Decade Photo Competition is calling for photograph submissions from Canadian residents who self-identify as Early Career Ocean Professionals (i.e., 10 years or less of professional experience within any field related to the ocean). All photographs entered in the Competition must be of Canadian content (i.e. taken in Canada and relating to Canada), and entered into one of the 4 categories:

  1. The Blue Future
  2. Unexpected Encounters
  3. Ocean Solutions
  4. Things We Do for The Ocean

The winner of the grand prize will be invited to participate in a Students on Ice expedition in 2024 as an expedition photographer and will receive a one-year subscription to the Canadian Geographic magazine. Sponsored by Canadian Geographic, ECOP Canada, and the Students on Ice (SOI) Foundation, the competition is open for photo submissions until 11:59 p.m. EST on November 24, 2023.

Live it Earth Educational Platform receives Ocean Decade endorsement

Live it Earth, an educational platform recently endorsed by the Ocean Decade, has launched their brand new program on the St. Lawrence Estuary. Over 6,000 students tuned in to watch the show and ask questions live to ocean experts on World Oceans Day. To celebrate the Ocean Decade, Live it Earth has opened up 7 ocean-related programs and offers free user access all across Canada. Each program includes a featured show, a comprehensive teacher resource package, and many other resources.

If you’ve missed out on a live session, you can still watch the whole of the Ocean Series using the code OCEANS-23. Make sure to keep an eye out in September for the launch of a brand new show, bringing you stories from the Beaufort Sea Delta!

Ocean People Canada launches and holds its first meeting

Ocean People Canada is a new initiative conceived at the Fifth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC5) in Vancouver by representatives from the Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA), ECOP Canada, Ocean Wise, and Ocean Uprise, aiming to “connect and inform Canada’s ‘ocean people’ to build relationships, share information, and encourage collaboration” through meetings and events.

ORCA is working in collaboration with Ocean People Canada to maximize efforts to achieve our shared goal of bringing the Canadian ocean community together using the infrastructure, resources, and network that are already available through ORCA. Opportunities for Canadian Youth and Early Career Ocean Professionals

Ocean Wise is Calling Canadian Youth for its Next Cohort!

Applications are open for Ocean Bridge! This Ocean Wise program provides opportunities to 140 youth to work together and learn from experts in marine conservation through an online platform and two in-person learning journeys to create projects related to ocean health to benefit communities across Canada. This is a 5-month part-time program that can be done while working a full-time job, and it’s free!

ECOP Canada Offers Travel and Conference Funding for Canadian Early Career Ocean Professionals

ECOP Canada has opened up a call for general applications for early career ocean professionals (ECOPs) in Canada to apply for 2023 Travel and Conference Registration Stipends. Applications are due on Sunday, October 1, 2023 but applicants will be considered on a first come, first serve rolling basis as ECOP Canada aims to distribute this funding as equitably as possible among ECOPs in Canada.

2024 Ocean Decade Conference: Pre-registration and call for satellite events now open!

Three years after the start of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference will bring together the Ocean Decade community and partners to celebrate achievements and set joint priorities for the future of the Decade. It will take place on April 10-12, 2024, in Barcelona, Spain.

The conference will include opportunities for the presentation of innovative and transformative science solutions, in the context of a broader mandate of showcasing initiatives and generating dialogue across the whole science-policy-society interface. It will provide a global forum for governments, leaders, maritime sectors, philanthropy, universities, private sector, NGOs and more, to meet and catalyze new partnerships and collaborations.

Registration for the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference will take place in two steps:
