Context

NAFO Subdivisions 3KLPs Herring was last assessed in 2019 (DFO 2019).

The current update is requested by Fisheries Management to inform the development of management measures for the stocks for the upcoming fishing seasons. The update will review new information on status of East and South coast Newfoundland Herring in the following stock areas: Bonavista Bay – Trinity Bay,  St. Mary’s Bay – Placentia Bay, and Fortune Bay.

Objectives

• Review information on catches up to and including the 2020 fishery.
• Analyze available biological data on sizes, ages, maturities and spawning components.
• Report on industry input from telephone surveys.
• Update stock status for the Bonavista Bay-Trinity Bay, St. Mary’s Bay-Placentia Bay and Fortune Bay Herring stocks.
• Provide preliminary results from 2019 Bonavista Bay-Trinity Bay and 2020 Fortune Bay acoustic surveys
