Context
Divisions 3KL and Subdivision 3Ps Herring was last assessed in 2019 (DFO 2019) and a stock update was done in 2021 (DFO 2022).
The current assessment is requested by Fisheries Resource Management to inform the development of management measures for the stocks for the upcoming fishing seasons. The assessment will review new information on status of East and South coast Newfoundland Herring and the ecosystem in the following stock areas: White Bay – Notre Dame Bay, Bonavista Bay – Trinity Bay, Conception Bay-Southern Shore, St. Mary’s Bay – Placentia Bay, and Fortune Bay.
Objectives
- Review information on catches up to and including the 2021 fishery.
- Analyze biological data on sizes, ages, maturities and spawning components up to and including 2021.
- Report on industry input from telephone surveys.
- Report on ecosystem and recruitment.
- Report on inshore herring acoustic survey results from 2019, 2020 and 2021.
- Report on the results of ongoing research gillnet programs
- Update stock status for the Bonavista Bay-Trinity Bay, St. Mary’s Bay-Placentia Bay and Fortune Bay Herring stocks.
- Update biological data on White Bay-Notre Dame Bay and Conception Bay-Southern Shore Herring stocks.
