Repeal of the speed restriction exemption for commercial fishing activities in shallow waters within the static zones

Transport Canada (TC) – May 24, 2024 – This notice to fish harvesters is issued in accordance with the Transport Canada 2024 vessel traffic management measures to protect North Atlantic right whales (NARW) in Canada.

On May 17, 2024 a North Atlantic right whale was detected in the Southern static zone in waters less than 20 fathoms (36.57 m) deep. Vessels being used for commercial fishing in these waters must now proceed at speeds not exceeding 10 knots over the ground in the Southern static zone for 15 days.

The Interim Order for the Protection of the North Atlantic Right Whales (Eubalaena glacialis) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, 2024 came into effect on April 17, 2024. The Interim Order allows for vessels being used for commercial fishing in waters within the static zones that are not more than 20 fathoms (36.75 m) deep to travel at safe operational speeds unless a North Atlantic right whale is detected in those waters. If a North Atlantic right whale is detected, vessels being used for commercial fishing must travel at speeds no greater than 10 knots over the ground in the static zone associated with the detection for 15 days after the day on which the right whale was detected.
