Linkages with National and International Commitments and Priorities

Canada’s participation in the CBMP-Marine Plan contributes to national priorities and objectives. The work draws on and enriches science on polar bears, marine mammals, seabirds, fisheries, conservation and ecosystem-based management, one example being the Tarium Niryutait Marine Protected Area in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.

It contributes to Fisheries and Oceans efforts to identify ecologically and biologically sensitive areas (EBSAs), and to protect corals and sponges in Baffin Bay, an area of shared interest with Greenland.

Linkages also exist with the developing science initiatives associated with the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS)

The CBMP-Marine plan shares common indicators with the Canadian Northern Contaminants Program (NCP), which examines contaminant levels, trends and effects in marine ecosystems, with annual monitoring of key focal ecosystem components such as char, ringed seal, beluga, polar bear and seabird eggs (thick-billed murre and northern fulmar).

At the international level, the CBMP contributes the biodiversity component of Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks (SAON), provides scientific data and information to the Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment Working Group of the Arctic Council, and has been endorsed as the official Arctic component of the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON). CAFF also signed a Resolution of Cooperation in 2010 with the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, which encourages the two organizations to provide and use information and opportunities to promote the importance of Arctic biodiversity.
