Offshore oil, gas and energy research
About COOGER
The Centre for Offshore Oil, Gas and Energy Research (COOGER) is located at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO) in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. While most of COOGER’s work is done at BIO, the team also travels to other parts of Canada and the United States to work with research partners and to take part in workshops, conferences and research studies.
Formed in 2002, COOGER is made up of a diverse group with expertise in the fate and behaviour of petroleum spills in aquatic environments. Under the Government of Canada’s Oceans Protection Plan and the World Class Tanker Safety System program, COOGER is addressing concerns about potential risks by providing science-based information and advice on how petroleum spills behave under a range of environmental and oceanographic conditions, and how effective certain methods are for treating spills. Through its research, COOGER provides assistance in improving Canada’s spill response measures.
Under these programs, COOGER’s main areas of research are:
- Fate and behaviour of diluted bitumen products in the environment.
- Fate and behaviour of refined oil products in the environment.
- Improving response measures and providing background information for the creation of localised response plans for high-traffic shipping ports.
Activities, experiments and analyses that contribute to these largescale projects include:
- Detailed hydrocarbon chemistry and microbiology laboratory analyses, wave and flume tank experiments, and field programs.
- In-situ monitoring and tracking of petroleum to model its dispersion in water.
- Studying the weathering of products to understand their persistence and breakdown in the environment.
- Studying interactions between microbes and petroleum in response to spills.
COOGER is involved in many collaborative research projects with government departments, post-secondary institutions, the private sector and international organizations.
