International Year of the Salmon (IYS)
Fisheries and Oceans Canada provided $100,000 from the Partnership Fund to support the International Year of the Salmon (IYS). Canada is a member of the both international inter-governmental salmon organizations organizing the IYS: the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) and the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO). Fisheries and Oceans Canada is participating for Canada and has provided funding to the IYS.
IYS begins with a 2018 symposium focused on the status of salmon knowledge, has three years of research (2018-20) and action by the international research community focused on a research governance model, analytical tools and information systems to integrate and share data and build a new generation of researchers. Reporting will follow in 2021-22.
The outcomes will inform future Fisheries and Oceans Canada policy and support improved long- and short-term forecasts for salmon, real-time advice to enforcement operations, sustainability strategies for salmon and human communities that utilize salmon and optimization of economic returns from hatcheries and fisheries. The outreach and public engagement themes for IYS include improving awareness of the status of salmon stocks and their cultural, social and economic importance and of the challenges they face from major environmental changes and a variety of anthropogenic factors.
