Database information
The Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Pacific Region zooplankton database is a Microsoft Access application for zooplankton and related data:
- entry
- storage
- retrieval
The zooplankton database holds about 350,000 detailed species records from about 9,500 oceanographic sampling stations.
Zooplankton tow data includes:
- most of the northeast Pacific Ocean from 42 to 65 degrees north and from 120 to 180 degrees west
- additional holdings of data collected both in the Arctic and Antarctic regions
The zooplankton database includes:
- Global Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics (GLOBEC)
- Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS)
- COPRA
- zooplankton-related projects starting in the 1980s to present, with data including:
- date
- mission
- positions
- net types
- station detail data, such as:
- genus
- species
- sub-species
- length
- weight
- split fractions
Entering data
Data entry uses user-friendly forms with lookup tables for various information. You may enter the station header information during a research mission using any computer with Access XP, and later upload it to the master database. Enter the station detail after analysis on any computer with Access XP and a network connection.
The database is constructed for a multiple-user environment.
Database audience
The zooplankton database is available for use by:
- private research groups
- university research facilities
- other government institutions
