2007 Survey of the Recreational Cod Fishery of Newfoundland and Labrador

Concepts, Terms and Definitions

Following is a glossary of terms and definitions used in the survey and throughout this report:

Recreational Fishing
Refers to non-commercial fishing; angling and sport fishing are covered in the definition used by the survey. Note that ceremonial fishing and subsistence fishing are not covered by the survey and are, therefore, not included in any of the estimates presented in this report.
Angler
An individual of any age who fished for cod in the recreational fishery in 2007; the identification of active anglers was based on the information obtained from the results of the survey pre-screening and the responses of individual respondents. A licence to fish for cod in the recreational fishery in 2007 was not required.
Adult Anglers
The adult angler population in 2007 who were 16 years of age and older.  Most survey results presented in this report relate to recreational fishing activities of all anglers in NL with some specific tables relating only to adult anglers.
Household
Made up of one or more adult anglers who reside in the same dwelling.
Cod Caught
Number of cod caught and retained by anglers.
Day Fished
A day or part of a day on which an angler fished for cod.
Cod
Refers to Northern cod (gadus morhua)
Wolffish
Refers to any of the species of wolffish in Atlantic Canada listed as threatened or of special concern under the Species at Risk Act; namely, northern (threatened), spotted (threatened) and striped (special concern)
NAFO Sub-division
Specific geographic boundaries within Canada as determined by the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization in its Convention areas. All data presented by NAFO sub-division refers to where the fishing activity occurred.
Census Division (CD)
Geographic areas set by Statistics Canada, which are used during the conduct of the Census of Population for Canada. NL has 11 such areas and, for the purposes of sample selection, the two CDs for Labrador were combined (Table 1). Also for purposes of reporting, these CDs were named for general geographical areas of the province (see Map of Newfoundland and Labrador)
Residence areas
For ease of reporting information based on where anglers lived, the 10 CDs were recoded into six major geographical areas, representing specific coastal and associated inland areas of the province (Table 2).
