Short description of the project, initiative or change
The Enterprise Staffing Team put forward a proposal at a 2019 “Dragons' Den”-style innovation event which ultimately was selected as a winner. The Team proposed an online portal through which to gather information from former students across the public service who are now eligible for student bridging. This is different than other initiatives in the public service as some departments collect and retain information of former students in their respective departments, but not for the public service as a whole. The scope of the project was revised to manage the volume of applicants. Additionally, an internal advertised process open to current students who will graduate by a specific date will be considered. The graduation date will change regularly to ensure a regular intake.
The Student Bridging Portal will allow current students of the public service who are eligible for student bridging, to inform DFO of this fact. Thousands of students are hired each year by the public service, but not all of them become term or indeterminate employees following graduation. This portal gives them a chance to inform DFO that they are currently a student in the public service and allows the organization to capitalize on the investment already made in them once they graduate.
The Student Bridging Portal will feature a user interface that allows for applicants to respond to screening questions and to upload documentation related to their education and achievements. VidCruiter's Applicant Tracking System (“VidTracking”) will allow HR professionals and hiring managers to track and manage applicants using the Student Bridging Portal throughout the recruitment process. The system offers capabilities beyond what the www.jobs.gc.ca platform provides.
