Deputy Minister Welcome Letter
October 31, 2022
Ms. Annette Gibbons
Deputy Minister
Fisheries and Oceans Canada
200 Kent Street
Ottawa, ON K1A 0E6
Deputy Gibbons,
Welcome aboard and congratulations on your appointment as Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. As the Associate Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard, we look forward to working with you and helping you transition into your new role.
We are confident that you will be well supported by our diverse and experienced senior management team and staff. You will find foundational information about our Department, structure, and senior management team in the corporate book as part of your transition materials.
In terms of our mandate and the range of issues we work on across our portfolio, we are guided by the priorities outlined in Minister Murray’s Mandate Letter. These priorities are focused on protecting Canada’s three oceans and waterways, ensuring they remain healthy for future generations, and providing economic opportunities to Canadians and coastal communities. In short, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard manage Canada’s fisheries and safeguard its waters by:
- Sustainably managing fisheries and aquaculture;
- Working with fishers, coastal and Indigenous communities to enable their continued prosperity from fish and seafood;
- Ensuring that Canada’s oceans and other aquatic ecosystems are protected from negative impacts;
- Ensuring commercial vessels and recreational boaters can safely navigate our waters; and,
- Being there to save lives and protect our environment when emergencies arise.
You will find more information on our priorities, partners, and key decision-making frameworks in the policy book as part of your transition material. In the upcoming days, you can also expect to receive a proposed briefing schedule for your consideration to help situate priority issues, key decisions, and events on the horizon.
Yours sincerely,
Lawrence Hanson
