National Peer Review Meeting (by teleconference): Review of “A proposal to reduce risk of vessel and right whale collision in the Roseway Basin region of the SW Scotian Shelf”

Chairperson: Patrice Simon

Summary

The purpose of this meeting was to review (via teleconference) the proposal entitled “A proposal to reduce risk of vessel and right whale collision in the Roseway Basin region of the SW Scotian Shelf” including the analyses used to delineate the areas to be avoided (ATBA) and also to weigh the two options presented for the ATBA. During the review it was important to keep in mind that the North Atlantic Right Whale (NARW) is highly endangered, and saving just two females per year would change trajectory of the population. Advice will be provided in the form of a research document, if approved, and small proceedings. Because of the need for advice in a very short time frame, Patrice Simon will draft key bullets of our conclusions of the meeting based on our group discussions and agreement, and forward them to Rob Stephenson, station director, St. Andrews Biological Station (SABS). The advice will come from Maritimes region.
