National Science Advisory Process on Precautionary Approach Frameworks for Canadian Input Control Fisheries (Lobster and Dungeness Crab); April 27-28, 2010
Chairperson: R. O'Boyle
Editor: L. Setterington
Summary
A national science workshop was held April 27-28, 2010 at the Citadel Halifax Hotel in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the purpose of which was to explore the scientific requirements of a precautionary approach (PA) framework for Atlantic lobster and Pacific Dungeness crab stocks. This was motivated by the new requirements of Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Sustainable Fisheries Framework Fishery Decision-Making Framework Incorporating the Precautionary Approach.
A total of 23 participants from various regions of Oceans and Science and Fisheries and Aquaculture Management Sectors of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), as well as invited experts from the United States (Maine Department of Marine Resources and University of Maine) attended the workshop. The participants discussed precautionary approach frameworks used in fisheries elsewhere and how these might apply to fisheries for Atlantic lobster and Pacific Dungeness crab. The workshop was successful in identifying potential indicators and reference points for the fisheries in question and in describing gaps and uncertainties. Much work still needs to be undertaken and thus recommendations were made on possible next steps. The commitment to move ahead on the issues raised was evident with the workshop providing its impetus.
