Proceedings 2011/015

National Science Advisory Workshop on Potential Technologies for Closed containment Saltwater Salmon Aquaculture; January 29-31, 2008

Chairperson: M. Chadwick

Summary

The purpose of the workshop was to enable a technical and scientific review on the current knowledge of closed containment aquaculture systems and to provide scientific advice on the feasibility of saltwater closed-containment technologies for salmon aquaculture. Closed-containment can be defined as a barrier technology that attempts to restrict and control interactions between farmed fish and the external environment. The goal of closed-containment technology is to minimize environmental impacts and create greater control over factors beneficial to aquaculture production. Five working papers were developed to examine the viability of closed containment technology from a biological, technical, engineering, and fish health and welfare perspectives. A sixth working paper integrated the five papers to develop a model farm.
