Pup production of Northwest Atlantic grey seals in the Gulf of St. Lawrence

By M.O. Hammill and G.B. Stenson

Abstract

Pup production in the Gulf of St. Lawrence was estimated in 2010 using visual strip transect surveys of the whelping patches on the ice in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence and complete counts on islands. Reconnaisance flights were also carried out to determine if any pupping occurred along the south and southwest coasts of Newfoundland and Anticosti Island. A small number of pups were found on Anticosti while no pupping occurred along Newfoundland. Where possible, counts were corrected for the proportion of pupping completed when the survey was completed. Total pup production is estimated to be 11,228 (SE=6,442) animals.
