Distribution of Northern shrimp fishing effort in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence

By L. Savard

Abstract

In the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the only type of authorized northern shrimp fishing is a commercial fishing practised with a trawl for which the minimal mesh size is 40 mm. This report describes the shrimp trawling activities in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence between 1982 and 2011. The examination of fishing activities will allow the categorisation of exploited areas relative to the intensity of trawling. The results of this examination could be used to assess the risk of harm the fishing activity may cause to the habitat and benthic communities.
