Update of bycatch in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence Northern shrimp fishery in 2012

By Louise Savard

Abstract

In the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the only type of authorized northern shrimp fishing is a commercial fishing practised with a trawl for which the minimal mesh size is 40 mm. Although large individuals are released from the trawl through the mandatory use of a separator grate, a certain number of small specimens remain in the catches. This report documents the composition and size of bycatches in the Gulf shrimp fishery in 2012.
