Update on the identification, description and spatial and temporal use of striped bass (Morone saxatilis) habitats by the St. Lawrence River population, Quebec
By Valiquette, E., Harvey, V. and Pelletier, A.-M.
Abstract
Due to habitat alteration, heavy recreational and commercial fishing, and non-compliance with regulations, the striped bass (Morone saxatilis) population in the St. Lawrence River disappeared in the late 1960s. When the decision was made to restore biodiversity in the St. Lawrence River, an action plan was developed, and, in 2002, the Government of Quebec and its partners began taking steps to restore the striped bass population in the St. Lawrence River. In 2011, Fisheries and Oceans Canada came up with a recovery strategy in collaboration with the Government of Quebec and key contributors. To implement this strategy, track the recovery of the species and identify habitats used by it, numerous data collection projects have been ongoing since 2003. This document provides an overview of our current knowledge of the striped bass's use of habitats at every developmental stage.
