Stock Assessment of Northern Cod (Div. 2J3KL)
Newfoundland and Labrador Regional Advisory Process
March 22-23 and March 24-25, 2011
St. John’s, NL
Chairperson: Don Stansbury
Context
The status of Divisions 2J3KL cod was last assessed in March 2010. In November 2010 a limit reference point, as described in the decision-making framework developed by DFO for the application of Precaution in the fishery, was determined. A Zonal Advisory Process to review the Recovery Potential Assessment of all stocks of Atlantic Cod will also precede (February 2011) the next stock assessment of Northern (2J3KL) cod, and is expected to provide additional information on the recovery potential of the stock under various stock projections and management scenarios. A current stock assessment, in accordance with the Sustainable Fisheries Framework, is requested by Fisheries and Aquaculture Management to provide the Minister with advice on the status of the stock.
Objectives
- Based on accepted assessment methodologies for the Northern (2J3KL) cod stock, and using updated information to 2010, to provide an assessment of the current status of offshore populations, inshore populations, and the stock as a whole. In particular, assess current spawning biomass relative to Blim, total (age 3+) biomass, strength of year-classes entering the exploitable population in the next 1-3 years, exploitation rate, natural mortality, distribution and biological characteristics, and indicate the major sources of uncertainty where applicable.

A Science Advisory Report (SAR) and associated research document(s) will be produced. A Proceedings Report will record the meeting discussions.
