Catch Scenarios Assessment for Atlantic Mackerel (Scomber scombrus L.) for the 2012-13 Fishing Seasons

Regional Science Special Response Process (SSRP) – Quebec Region

April 30, 2012
Mont-Joli, Quebec

Chairperson: Martin Castonguay

Context

An assessment of the Atlantic mackerel of NAFO subareas 3 and 4 was held on April 18, 2012 in Mont-Joli to provide scientific advice for the 2012 and 2013 fishing seasons. Following this meeting, the highlights of the assessment were presented during a conference call with fishery managers on April 24, 2012. During this call, Fishery and Aquaculture Management has requested that new fishing mortality scenarios should be reviewed to assist the Department in setting the TAC and to assess the impact on spawning biomass.

Objectives

Examine the impact of different fishing mortality scenarios on Atlantic mackerel catches and spawning biomass for 2012 and 2013 fishing seasons. These scenarios are:

  1. Fishing mortality in 2011 (as calculated by the Sequential Population Analysis),
  2. Fishing mortality in 2011 - 25%, and
  3. Fishing mortality in 2011 + 50%.
