Regional Science Response Process – Quebec Region

March 16, 2017
Mont-Joli, QC

Chairperson: Charley Cyr

Context

The scallop stock assessment is conducted every three years, with the most recent assessment completed in February 2016. In the case of subarea 20A of the Magdalen Islands, decision rules were established to determine on an annual basis the fishing effort. This effort is calculated from the catch per unit of effort from logbooks and abundance indices from the Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) survey.

Objectives

Review the commercial fishery indices (landing and catch per unit of effort) and the DFO research survey indices (scallop density by different size classes).

Estimate the level of effort allowed according to the precautionary approach guidelines for the 2017 fishing season.
