Threat Assessment for Atlantic Mud-piddock (Barnea truncata)
Regional Science Response Process – Maritimes Region
February 16, 2018
Dartmouth, NS
Chairperson: Lottie Bennett
Context
The Atlantic Mud-piddock (Barnea truncata) was listed as Threatened under the Species at Risk Act (SARA) in May 2017. For Threatened species, SARA requires that a recovery strategy be completed within 2 years of listing. A threat assessment table is a required component of the recovery strategy. Information on threats is needed to plan and prioritize recovery measures for the species, and to inform the regulatory and management decisions made by DFO and others regarding human activities that interact with the species. The Atlantic Mud-piddock Recovery Potential Assessment (DFO 2010) did not include a threat assessment consistent with the most recent guidance (DFO 2014).
Objective
The objective of this regional science response process is:
- To review a threat assessment for the Atlantic Mud-piddock, prepared in accordance with the criteria outlined in the DFO Guidance on Assessing Threats, Ecological Risk, and Ecological Impacts for Species at Risk (DFO 2014).
