Chairpersons: Kennedy, E., and F. Page

Summary

The Centre for Integrated Aquaculture Science (CIAS) held a national conference call on March 26, 2007 to discuss priority research within Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) for achieving sustainable aquaculture production in Canada. This was the first national conference call on sustainable production research by the newly formed CIAS, which is one of the Centres of Expertise recently created by DFO Science in response to implementing actions under the Science Renewal to promote innovation, effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of science in DFO. The conference call enabled discussions among DFO researchers from across Canada on priority science activities in key areas pertaining to sustainable aquaculture production in Canada. The information gathered from the discussions has been used to inform the development of the inaugural CIAS research work plan for 2007-08. The conference call was attended by researchers from six DFO research laboratories across Canada, science managers from the National Capital Region (NCR), as well as an NCR representative from the Oceans Directorate. The conference call participants reached consensus on several potential initiatives and research projects aimed at addressing priority issues related to sustainable aquaculture production.
