Workshop on Establishing a CIAS Research Work Plan for Ecosystem-Based Management of Aquaculture; February 28 – March 1, 2007
Summary
A workshop on establishing a CIAS research work plan for ecosystem-based management of aquaculture was held at the Fairmont Château Laurier, Ottawa, Ontario on February 28 – March 01, 2007. This was the first workshop convened by the newly formed Centre for Integrated Aquaculture Science (CIAS), which is one of the Centres of Expertise recently created by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) in response to implementing actions under the Science Renewal to promote innovation, effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of science in DFO. The workshop enabled discussions among DFO researchers and client representatives (i.e., Aquaculture Management Directorate (AMD), Habitat Management, and Oceans Directorate) on priority science activities in key areas pertaining to the interactions of aquaculture operations with aquatic ecosystems. The resulting information then would be used to inform the development of the inaugural CIAS research work plan for 2007-08. The workshop was attended by researchers from ten DFO research laboratories, science managers from the National Capital Region (NCR), as well as NCR representatives from AMD, Habitat Management, and Oceans Directorate. Day 1 of the workshop focused on an overview of the CIAS, including brief introductions from each workshop participant, an overview of priority science issues from AMD and Habitat Management, and discussions on research approaches to best address these issues. Day 2 of the workshop continued with discussions on research approaches to best address client issues, as well as discussions on researcher relevant issues. The workshop participants reached consensus on several potential research projects aimed at addressing some of the client priority issues. These projects would be used to inform the development of the CIAS 2007-08 research work plan.
