Proceedings 2009/006
Proceedings of the Workshop to Finalize National Guidelines for Assessing the Biological Risk of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) to Canada; June 3-5, 2008
Chairpersons: N. E. Mandrak and B. Cudmore
Summary
Risk assessments of aquatic invasive species (AIS) are required to make sound management decisions regarding the aquatic ecosystems, fisheries resources, fish habitat, and aquaculture that AIS may impact, and that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is mandated to protect. DFO formed the Centre of Expertise for Aquatic Risk Assessment (CEARA) to develop the necessary expertise in risk assessment across the country. One of the mandates and objectives of CEARA was to develop a scientifically defensible national framework for conducting biological risk assessments of AIS. This mandate was addressed at a 2006 national workshop aimed at the development of DFO's national framework for conducting biological risk assessments of AIS. A subsequent peer review workshop was held in 2007. The present document comprises the Proceedings of a second and final peer review workshop held in 2008 and forms the basis for finalization of the detailed level risk assessment protocol.
