Proceedings 2009/022
Proceedings of the First Workshop of the Stock Assessment Methods Committee; January 7-8, 2009
Chairperson: N. Cadigan
Summary
The formative workshop for the Technical Expertise in Stock Assessment (TESA) program was held January 7-8, 2009 in Vancouver, BC. The purpose of the workshop was to identify initial priorities for the various program elements (i.e. stock assessment methods committee, annual methods conference, training) of TESA to support the development of an annual plan by the Steering Committee for 2009-2010, as well as to discuss how the various elements could/should operate. Participants were from all DFO regions, and several people from West Coast universities. The list of participants is attached. Noel Cadigan (DFO, NL Region) was Chair.
It was concluded that the initial broad theme for the first Stock Assessment Methods Committee (SAMC) workshop should be Techniques for the Provision of Advice in Information-Poor Situations. This broad theme will be addressed in sub-themes, based on an initial call for cases to be addressed at the 1st annual workshop planned for the fall of 2009. It was decided to delay plans for the Annual Methods Conference for one year. Common training needs identified included 1) an introductory short course for each Region in the programming language R; 2) a basics-of-stock assessment techniques course; and 3) financial support for an inter-facility mentoring program.
