Abstract

Since 1971, a standardized research vessel bottom trawl survey has been conducted in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (NAFO 4T). The objective of the survey is to obtain abundance indices for the major groundfish resources in the area. These include cod, American plaice, white hake, winter flounder, and witch flounder. This report presents the preliminary results of the 1996 survey conducted in the period September 3 to 26. It includes the updated abundance indices for the stocks mentioned above as well as length frequency, distribution, and bottom temperature information. The results are compared with those from previous surveys. These results should be considered preliminary. Additional verification and age reading of the samples remains to be completed.
