Abstract

From July 26 to August 2, 1999, a groundfish trawl survey was conducted off the Magdalen Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (NAFO 4T). The main objective of the survey was to establish an index of abundance and biomass for the yellowtail flounder resource in the coastal waters of this region. This project is a collaborative effort between DFO Science Branch and the local fishing industry. The survey was conducted with the Josée Daniel, a fishing vessel from the Magdalen Islands. Fifteen fish species were captured at 52 sampling locations. Yellowtail flounder were present at all but one of the sampling locations. The abundance and biomass of yellowtail and winter flounder were mapped using ordinary kriging. Mean density and variance were calculated using block kriging in an area delimited by the perimeter of the sample locations and the Magdalen Islands coastline. The modal length of yellowtail flounder was 24 cm, similar to that of the annual 4T groundfish survey that is conducted further offshore of the Magdalen Islands. Modifications to the sampling protocol of the Magdalen Islands survey are proposed to improve the capture of juvenile flatfish.
