Analyses of stock and fishery dynamics for cod in 3Ps and 3KL based on tagging studies in 1997-2002
By Cadigan, N., and Brattey, J.
Abstract
We estimated exploitable biomass for three regions in 3KL for weeks in which sufficient landings (>50 tonnes) were reported to get reasonable estimates. Catch-weighted averages (over weeks) of these estimates were 3 000 tonnes for the inshore of 3K, 14 000 tonnes for the northern part of 3L, and 7 000 tonnes for the southern part of 3L. The 2002 total biomass estimate for the inshore part of 3KL was 24 000 tonnes. This was substantially less than the 2001 estimater of 59 000 tonnes. The exploitation rate (landings divided by average exploitable biomass) for 3KL in 2002 was 17%. This increased from 2001 (12%) despite a reduction in the quota from 7 000 tonnes in 2001 to 4 000 tonnes in 2002.
