Results from the August 2003 sentinel mobile survey of the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence

By Poirier, G.A., Currie, L.

Abstract

In 2003 the mobile gear component of the industry-based Sentinel survey in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (NAFO Area 4T) was conducted, for the first time, as a stratified random survey covering the whole of 4T. Four otter trawl vessels participated in the survey during August. A total of 240 stations were apportioned among the four vessels; \at 221 of these stations, valid fishing sets were completed. There were no significant differences among vessels in catchability of the species examined. Comparisons of length frequencies caught by the four vessels showed few differences in size ranges, but some differences in size frequencies. Irregularities in data recording, however, gave rise to uncertainty in vessel comparisons. Precision of vessel comparisons should increase with the integration of results from present and future surveys, thus enabling establishment of abundance trends for several fish species.

This report summarises the results of the 2003 Sentinel mobile gear stratified random survey.
