Results from the August 2004 Sentinel mobile survey of the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence

By Poirier, G.A., L. Currie

Abstract

In 2003 the mobile gear component of the industry-based Sentinel survey in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (NAFO Area 4T) was conducted, for the first time, as a stratified random survey. Four otter trawl vessels participated in the survey during August. The 2nd Sentinel mobile stratified random survey was conducted in August, 2004. Three vessels from the 2003 survey participated in the 2004 survey; a different vessel was used from Gaspé. A total of 237 valid tows were completed. Differences in catchabilities of cod, white hake, American plaice and winter flounder were found among the vessels. Comparisons of catchability by size of fish were limited by the number of sets fished in the restricted geographical distribution of some species. Precision of vessel comparisons should increase with the integration of results from present and future surveys, thus enabling establishment of abundance trends for several fish species.

This report summarises the results of the 2004 Sentinel mobile gear stratified random survey.
