A review of Newfoundland and Labrador snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) fishery performance–1979-2005

By D.M. Taylor, P.G. O’Keefe and P.J. Veitch

Abstract

The Newfoundland and Labrador snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) fishery began in the late 1960’s. Initially, landings were recovered as gillnet bycatch but soon were predominately from a directed baited trap fishery. Fishing activitity expanded rapidly during the 1990’s resulting in peak landings of 69,000 t in 1999. A chronological overview of milestones, both regulatory and fishery expansion in nature, which highlight the development of the industry are outlined. In addition, Newfoundland and Labrador Snow Crab Management Area performance as reflected by yearly summaries of landings, effort, catch per unit of effort (CPUE) and quota is presented for the period 1979–2005.
